Session Style Guide
I’m always happy to help with outfit planning, so if you want a second opinion, feel free to send options my way. Below is a general guide to help you choose pieces that photograph beautifully and feel like you.
The goal is to create a look that feels natural, cohesive, and timeless. Outfits should complement each other and the location without distracting from the people in the photos.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. That always comes through on camera.

COORDINATION (COUPLES & FAMILIES)
Aim to coordinate, not match exactly.
- Choose a shared color palette of 2 to 4 tones
- Mix tones rather than wearing the same outfit
- Keep the level of dressiness similar across everyone
- Example: one person in a cream dress, another in tan and light blue rather than both in white shirts and jeans
TEXTURES & LAYERS
Texture adds depth and makes images feel more dimensional.
Great options
- Knits
- Linen or cotton
- Denim
- Flowy dresses or skirts
- Light jackets, cardigans, or layers
Layers also allow for quick variation without a full outfit change.
Fit & Movement
Clothing that moves naturally tends to photograph best.
- Flowy dresses, skirts, or looser fabrics create movement
- Avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing
- Make sure everything fits well and allows you to move comfortably
If you will be walking, sitting, or interacting a lot, comfort matters.
Logos & Patterns
Keep things simple and clean.
- Avoid visible logos or graphics
- Avoid small, busy patterns or thin stripes
- Subtle patterns are fine if they are not distracting
Shoes & Accessories
- Stick with neutral, clean shoes
- Avoid athletic sneakers unless they fit the look
- Remove bulky items like smart watches or hair ties on wrists if you prefer a cleaner look
Second Outfit (If Applicable)
If you’re bringing a second outfit, aim for variety.
- One more casual look and one more elevated
- Or a color palette shift for a different feel
- This helps give your gallery more range
Location Consideration
Think about how your outfit works with the setting.
- Woodsy or field locations pair well with neutrals and earthy tones
- Beach locations look great with light, airy colors
- City sessions can handle slightly more contrast and structure
Hair, Makeup & Details
Keep things true to you. A slightly polished version of your usual look photographs beautifully, and you’ll feel the most confident when everything feels familiar.
