How to Feel More Comfortable in Front of the Camera

If you've ever thought, "I'm awkward in photos," you're definitely not alone. Almost every client tells me some version of that before their session. The good news? You don't have to know how to pose or feel like a model to end up with photos you love.

1. Choose Clothes That Feel Like You

The more comfortable you feel in what you're wearing, the more confident you'll look. Instead of buying something completely different just for photos, choose outfits that fit well and feel like your style.

If you're looking for outfit inspiration, pay attention to the colors and overall feel of the photos you save on Pinterest. You'll often notice similar color palettes or styles showing up over and over.

2. Stop Worrying About Posing

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you'll be expected to know exactly what to do.

That's my job.

Throughout your session, I'll guide you with prompts and natural movement so you're never left wondering where your hands should go or how to stand. Most of the best photos come from small interactions, walking together, laughing, or simply taking a moment to slow down.

3. Focus on the Person You're With

If you're having a couples session, don't think about the camera.

Think about each other.

Talk, laugh, tell a story, or even tease each other a little. When your attention shifts away from the lens, your expressions become much more genuine.

4. Don't Expect to Feel Natural Right Away

Almost everyone feels a little awkward during the first few minutes.

That's completely normal.

By the time we've been shooting for 5 to 10 minutes, most people have started to fully embrace the process. Give yourself permission to ease into the session instead of expecting instant confidence.

5. Trust the Process

You don't have to know your angles or practice poses beforehand.

Lighting, location, posing, and camera angles all work together to create flattering images, and that's something I take care of throughout your session.

Your only job is to show up ready to have fun.

6. Remember Why You're Taking These Photos

Instead of worrying about whether your smile looks perfect or where your hands are, focus on what these photos are really for.

They're about celebrating this season of your life, whether that's your senior year, your relationship, your family, or simply creating memories you'll want to look back on years from now.

Those genuine moments are always the ones people treasure the most.
