7 Tips to Help You Feel Confident During Your Couples Session
Whether this is your first professional photo session together or your tenth, it's completely normal to feel a little nervous beforehand. One of the most common things I hear from couples is, "We're awkward in front of the camera."
The good news? You don't have to be a model to get beautiful, natural photos.
My goal is to make your session feel more like spending an evening together than posing for photos. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your couples session.
1. Wear Something That Feels Like You
Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. If you're constantly adjusting your clothes or wearing something that doesn't feel like your style, it'll show in the photos.
A few things to keep in mind:
Stick with neutral or earthy tones when possible.
Coordinate instead of matching exactly.
Avoid large logos or busy patterns.
Wear shoes that work with the location and that you don't mind walking in.
If you're ever unsure, I'm always happy to help you choose between outfit options before your session.
2. Trust the Process
You don't need to know how to pose!
I'll guide you through the entire session with prompts and direction so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look. Some of the best images happen in the in-between moments, so don't worry about being perfect.
3. Focus on Each Other
Instead of thinking about the camera, focus on your partner.
Talk, laugh, hold hands, tell a joke, or simply enjoy being together. Those genuine interactions are what create authentic photos you'll love looking back on.
4. Don't Stress About the Weather
A cloudy evening can actually create some of the softest, most flattering light.
If the forecast calls for heavy rain or unsafe weather, we'll reschedule. I always keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session so you don't have to worry about making that decision on your own.
5. Arrive a Few Minutes Early
Giving yourself a little extra time helps you start the session feeling relaxed instead of rushed.
Whether you're fixing your hair, changing shoes, or just taking a deep breath before we start, those few extra minutes make a difference.
6. Leave the Small Things Behind
Phones, keys, wallets, bulky jackets, water bottles, and smart watches can easily sneak into photos.
Before we begin, we'll make sure pockets are empty and anything distracting is tucked away so the focus stays on the two of you.
7. Have Fun
At the end of the day, this session is about celebrating your relationship.
You don't have to perform or be perfectly posed the entire time. The best photos usually come from laughing together, walking hand in hand, or sharing a quiet moment in between.
My job is to create a relaxed environment where you can simply be yourselves.
